Located between tea gardens and hills at the foothills of the Khasi-Jaintia (Meghalaya) hills, on the Bangladesh-India border. It’s famous for the crystal-clear Piyain River, cascading waterfalls, and the historic 1932 Dawki Bridge.
- Distance: About 56–58 km from Sylhet city.
- How to go: Rent Microbuses, Cars, Legunas, or CNGs from Subhanighat, Osmani Shishu Uddan, Naiorpool Point, Ambarkhana, or outside the Railway Station.
- Bus fare from Sylhet to Jaflong is ৳110–120.
Ratargul Swamp Forest
One of the most beautiful attractions in Sylhet, a freshwater swamp forest that floods 20–30 feet deep in monsoon season versus about 10 feet the rest of the year.
- Distance: About 26 km from Sylhet city.
- How to go: Take a CNG auto-rickshaw or jeep to Shringi Bridge via the inner roads of Khadim Tea Gardens, local CNG from Amberkhana costs about ৳100/person, or ৳1,200–1,500 for a full-day reserved CNG/autorickshaw. From there, small wooden boats (4–6 people) into the forest cost ৳400–800. Kayaking is also available (at ৳150/person, with a guide for another ৳150).
- Note: Agree on a price with the boatman before starting the trip.
Bichanakandi (Bisnakandi)
A stunning quarry-landscape where many layers of the Khasi mountains meet at a single point, with a high waterfall and a branch of the Piyain river flowing beneath dark monsoon clouds.
- Distance: About 39–40 km from Sylhet city, in Gowainghat Upazila.
- How to go: CNG auto-rickshaws from Amberkhana Point go to Hadarpar, from where you hire a local boat to reach Bichanakandi. CNG fare from Amberkhana runs about ৳80/person (roughly 1.5 hrs), with boat fare around ৳400–500 round-trip.
Bholaganj Sada Pathor
Known for unique white stones scattered along the banks of the Dhalai River, framed by the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, a tranquil, postcard-like escape with boating, swimming, and floating.
- Distance: About 33–35 km from Sylhet city.
- How to go: Private car/microbus rental runs ৳2,500–3,000/day; CNG full-day rental from Ambarkhana costs ৳1,000–1,500; local bus fare is ৳50–60/person.
- Boats from Bholaganj to the Sada Pathar area cost about ৳800 for up to 10 people.
Lalakhal
An area surrounded by hills, tea gardens, natural forests, and rivers near the Meghalaya mountain range, known for its striking turquoise-blue river water.
- Distance: About 44 km from Sylhet city.
- How to go: Accessible by car, microbus, Leguna, or local bus. Car/microbus rental runs ৳2,500–3,500/day.
Quick Tea Garden Escapes
If your schedule during the event weekend doesn’t allow for a longer trip, there are also several lovely tea gardens located right around Sylhet city where you don’t have to drive hours into the countryside to get lost in a sea of emerald green; instead, you can take a quick detour to these stunning spots:
- Malnicherra Tea Estate: This is the oldest commercial tea garden in the entire Indian subcontinent (established in 1849). It is a massive green paradise located right by the Airport Road, making it incredibly popular for quick trips. (Note: Since it is privately run, remember to politely ask the gate authorities for permission before entering.)
- Lakkatura Tea Estate: Located right next to Malnicherra and across from the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, this massive government-managed garden spans over 3,200 acres. It is famous for its wide, rolling hills and beautiful walking paths.
- Tarapur Tea Garden: Nestled directly within the city limits near the Pathantula area, this is the most accessible garden if you are short on time. It is a local favorite for a peaceful afternoon walk away from downtown traffic.
- Ali Bahar Tea Estate: Situated very close to the airport route, this quiet estate offers peaceful, winding trails and beautiful views of traditional tea-growing hillocks.
- Khadim Tea Estate: Located near the Khadimnagar area on the city outskirts, this serene garden features beautiful landscapes where you can relax and hear natural water streams.
How to go: The easiest way to reach any of these city tea gardens is to grab a local CNG auto-rickshaw from Amberkhana Point. They all sit along or just off the main Airport Road, taking only a quick 10 to 15-minute ride from the city center.
